Our new Palisade is the first car that we've owned that has a GDI engine. After researching the pros and cons of this type of motor I've noticed that many people are recommending installing a catch can to reduce the amount of crud building up on the intake valves. We plan on keeping this car for a long time. For that reason I am seriously considering installing one. The thought of having the intake valves crushed walnut shell blasted every 60,000 miles makes me very concerned.

Has anyone installed a catch can on their Palisade? Would something as simple as installing a catch can void the warranty? I also wonder why manufacturers don't have a system like this already included. Supposedly, the Atkins cycle of Hyundai's 3.8 six offsets some of the inherit issues that direct injection causes.

Maybe I stressing over nothing. Ya know, like first time parent syndrome lol!

There Is a long running question/debate over this and if they’re worth it. I used to read about it all the time wh3n I had my Camaro SS. if you google this you’re sure to hear lots about it. I BELIEVE that technically manufacturers can’t out of hand void your warranty over this. HOWEVER, if one wants to fight about it they’re gonna. If you have aftermarket mods installed particularly in/for engine, transmission, exhaust etc and you have some failure and the dealership makes a claim issue over an aftermarket part then, if nothing else, you could be in for a long fight over it. I thought about it for mine but I think ultimately with the long power train warranty and doubting I’ll keep it even close to its expiration I decided against it as if something fails it’ll just be covered. I’m not saying I plan on getting rid of my Palisade after a few years, it’s just that I don’t put a lot of miles on it and I usually keep cars less than 4-5 years. If I was going to keep it for a long time I would think harder on it.

What is a catch can and how is it installed?

For the sake of completeness... our 3.8L engine has CVVT and CVVD (a Hyundai thing) and it can go from Atkinson to Otto cycle. It's not just an Atkinson cycle motor.

Don't waste your money. Buy something else. Our engines do not need catch can. Unless you bore, stroke and put turbo or supercharger.

I'm under the assumption a catch can is best served for power adders.

Cars that produce to much Horse Power makes more pressure inside and need to breath better because PCV Valve is small. Automaker c/o Engineers have this solve but people with Hi Power opt to place one. Mustang 500 for example does not have catch can place from Factory but have it inside car so dealers can install them.

Isn't the Mustang GT500 supercharged?

I agree high pressure equals more blow by gases equals more crud on intake valves on a GDI engine. With that said, isn't the compression ratio on our Palisades 3.8 something like 13:1?

Remember Turbos and All Superchargers create a lot of pressure and heat. Have not check specs in our cars but having a mod like that is more aesthetics vs real need of it. But if some one wants to add it, Go for it! Looks nice but thats it and probably Father Flying H is something happens probably going to say or blame a simple mod that don't hurt! As you reply a lot videos of this mod. Enjoy every day...
