For those that despise that Auto engine off function..or whatever they call it. A weeks ago I pushed the button down..wedged a small piece of cardboard next to ...and the function has remained disbled....so glad this worked...

Probably not the best idea I would imagine... Side Note tip if you only keep your foot on the brake pedal lightly the engine will not generally auto OFF either.

Not a good idea ? Not a fan of this Auto off nonsense ...to each his own....

Well, it lowers your emissions, increases your gas mileage, can be controlled easily by modulating the brake pedal as @anthpalisadeorg mentioned, and is one of the least intrusive systems of this type I’ve driven. What’s not to like? But yeah, to each his own.

Does modulationg the brake peddle lower emissions..no. Least intrusive..meaning it is intrusive. I like my plan " set it and forget it."

Can this not be turned off in the car settings or by switching to a different drive mode? With the Ultimate model we test drove the engine didnt turn off when we came to a stop.

The point was that modulating the brake pedal allows you to prevent it from shutting the engine off "on-demand", when you know it might be an issue. Least intrusive means it hardly ever is intrusive - not that it's always a little intrusive. In my experience, the engine is always back on and ready to go before I have time to move by foot back on the gas pedal. I've driven far worse start/stop systems (hello Jeep). But, as you said, to each his own.

Either way, to move on from this conversation... you can't turn it off permanently because Hyundai intends that feature to be on and provided gas mileage and emissions numbers to federal regulators with it on. So they won't let you. You'll have to find a creative work-around, such as people sticking something in the button on the console, if it really bothers you that much.

My brain is trained now to turn it off at the very first stop sign, traffic light or whatever causes me to come to a complete stop at the start of any drive. My finger can't race fast enough to get to that button before the ECU can turn off the engine.

Perhaps it different in Canada - I swear the engine never shut off during our test drive....I will check again when we go back to the dealership next time.

Even if the engine does get shut off, just press the button and it will start before you even get to take your foot off the brake.

We hate Auto Off as well. Had it on the Jeep and was disappointed that it was also on my new Palisade. I'll pay the extra dollar that it saves me in gas every year.

For what it's worth, it is much much better on the Hyundai than on a Jeep. Take it from someone who has driven a Jeep with it.
