Chipped grill and now THIS

So, no one at either dealership or Hyundai Consumer Support has said don't open and close the tailgate (even with that spring sticking out). At the dealer yesterday, they opened and closed it 3 times to show people since they claim they'd never seen it before. So, what happens if the spring busts out and hits someone and injures them? How about it shoots out and the tailgate collapses? Then what?

That's when I would mention those concerns and tell them they would be financially responsible for any damages and injuries that anyone suffered from a failure like that.

Hyundai Dealerships ..need I say more..

And yet, the spring didn't bust out and injure someone or something. ;)

just saying.

We can play this "what if" game all day long

just sayin'

It’s not. But it’s a broken strut. It’s a part failure and it’s not Hyundai’s fault. It sucks you had to drive however far to the dealership, but that’s always going to be the case if you want something covered under warranty. It stinks that they don’t have the part but dealerships don’t stock every single part for every vehicle. Keep the hatch closed like they said and get it swapped once the part is in. If some failure creates another problem they’ll have to fix that too.

Right, I've been around long enough and have owned more new cars than most. I get it. Service problems are a part of life. Hyundai's fault that it broke... Hmm, act of God? Maybe. Not being able to timely supply the part to fix it? Definitely. The dealer service manager said "I hope we get it in before you return to Florida". He said that after I told him when I am heading back. That's 30 days from when he said it. Hyundai Customer Support said the vehicle is so popular, there may be a parts shortage. I'm sure you would be doing backflips for joy not being able use your vehicle for carrying objects like golf clubs or luggage...

Feel your pain...just finished packing my Palisade for trip from New York to Florida..would like dealing with tailgate issues.
Hope I can make our round trip without headaches..

I’m sure you’ll be fine. The service manager at the dealer and everyone he showed it to said they never seen that before.

My point about the “what if” scenario comments is that I can come up with end of world situations all day.

When I was a kid, I played with a Red Ryder BB gun. Can you imagine if i shot my eye out?! That would me my parents fault for being negligent and letting me play with a BB gun!

When I was a kid, my parents let my sisters and me ride in the station wagon without our seat belts on. Can you imagine if we got in an accident and rolled over and I got ejected from the car? I’d be crippled or even worse, DEAD!

I never shot my eye out and my parents never crashed the car, so those possible scenarios never played out.

I guess I’m just being a prick. Been seeing too many of these “can you imagine” thread comments on the forums I visit and with all the political end of world stories ramping up with the election coming I had a moment of weakness last night and posted my frustration.

I get you’re pissed off about the broken strut. I would be too. If I was left without a replacement I would tell the dealership I’m removing the part until the new one comes in. At least that way I could open the hatch without the fear of the spring tearing out of its broken housing and possibly causing damage to something or someone. Sure the hatch will have to manually opened and held open, but at least I could put something back there with the help of others.

Yeah a lot of the cars stink. Some are saying they fear the smell might be toxic. What it?!? Yes, what if indeed. If some owners are fearful of toxic fumes then figure out how to get it analyzed (I have no clue) or don’t drive the car and contact your attorney.

One poster stated the lack of lighted buttons on the overhead console and having the dome light as a push button instead of a toggle switch is a design FLAW. A flaw it is not! It was a design decision. How can using a button a flaw just because most car makers use a toggle?

All cars have flaws and all cars break. Many dealer service centers suck and cause aggravation. In my life I can say the majority of service centers cause aggravation! I’ve never owned a luxury brand so I can’t speak for that level of car service but I am also probably a more demanding customer than most too. With my Palisade, when I took it in to have the alignment fixed and the steering wheel straightened, not only did the dealer NOT correct both problems properly, but they chipped the paint on two of my wheels. I know many owners would have accepted the alignment job and the denial of ability to straighten the steering wheel and called it a day. And I know many would never have noticed the chipped paint on the two wheel rims, but I did and it was a blood pressure raising stand off with the service advisor and manager to get my wheels replaced. Aggravating, but not surprising in the least unfortunately!

The chipped grill? Sugar happens. Modern cars aren’t the chrome and painted tanks cars used to be back in the 70s. All our chrome parts are molded and painted or coated plastics. Our car bodies are made from a thinner but stronger gauge of steel, but being thinner the car is more susceptible to denting. The brushed chrome grill trim piece took a bit from a rock and it tore the coating. It happens. Maybe an awesome dealer would replace it under good will, but that’s a small small chance and I would never bet on it.

Sorry for the long rant. My thumbs are tired now from posting on the phone.

Have a great weekend everyone! I haven’t seen the sun in 3 days thanks to all the wildfires putting smoke up. Bad times in CA...

So basically your purpose in life is to be a contrarian... Doing a great job!

Hope you got it fixed? The farmer in me, would have come up with a “Macgyver” type of fix, and just installed a few hose clamps on the strut, to ease peace of mind, and keep using it. :)

No, it has not been fixed. They are having problems coordinating the parts. Apparently it’s two pieces. Fortunately, the service manager at the 2nd dealer was so amazed, he kept opening and closing it to show people. The opposite plastic tube broke from its mount and covered the spring. I wrapped duck tape around it to hopefully prevent it from cracking. I’m not a farmer, but I did live in Iowa for 18 years!

Ha, Duct tape
has fixed many a repair on my farm .:). Always a roll in every pickup and tractor I own, plus baling wire, of course. Good Luck
