Disappointing Audio

Hopefully a newish owner that can add that $100 to their "bonus drive," money. Ching ching. I only have an SEL model, otherwise I would be jumping all over that.

Thanks for the reminder on the Bonus Drive rebate! Completely forgot about it. Just submitted :D(y)

Has anyone else noticed that the audio volume levels stay at the 3 previous independent levels each for AM, FM, and satellite? Very annoying when switching between a quiet FM or AM and then Sirius is blasting loud. Or maybe my Limited is not set up properly?

Tuffguy23 - yes, I've noticed. I think that Hyundai considers that to be not a problem, but a feature!

Sure wish someone could present a solution to the original problem here. The audio just sounds like crap, particularly on the high end. The more I listen, the more I agree with nodeone's assessment - Hyundai (or Harmon Kardon) is doing some sort of nasty compression of all sources. Such a bummer to ruin a great vehicle with such bad audio.

Although I generally only listen to news and buisness on Sirius...the sound quality for music etc. Is very poor. The limited for which I paid a premium was supposed to have a superior sound system...NOT !

For those of you who are saying the audio system is bad.. have you properly set the EQ? The HK system is pretty solid when you turn all of the bass boost and surround sound off. I have basically the same HK system in my Volvo XC60 and it sounds just as good.

I would think that that is the first thing that we all tried...

I think the more relevant question is what source are you using to judge the quality. I hope it's not XM as it's compressed like all hell.

I don’t have any issues in my limited with the sound system. I don’t use the bass boost either. HK sound system is in my Mercedes as well so to have one in a Palisade I was shocked!!

Harmon International (recently purchased by Samsung) makes a lot of the sound systems for automakers that are branded under different names based on audio companies that they bought over years (Infinity, JBL, Mark Levinson, Lexicon, and of course Harmon Kardon).

I have the same issue as OP and have tried what thehumanwire suggested but without effect. I agree, turning off those options presents a more true-to-source sound, however the issue is still there. It’s there across all sources I’ve tried: analog and HD radio, Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, Podcasts, etc. It sounds like compression artifacts, as if the head unit is cramming everything through a 128kbps MP3 encoding. There’s no detail or crispness to anything above 8KHz. Cymbals and snares sound smushed, and spoken “T”, “Ch”, and “S” sounds are hissy and full of static. It’s most noticeable on talk radio or podcasts. It‘s bad enough that my girlfriend doesn’t like listening to anything in my car above barely audible. She says it hurts her ears.

I have to say, this is the one and only thing I’m disappointed in on my Palisade (70MPH prop shaft vibration aside, which I need to get fixed with that TSB). Everything else about the vehicle is great.

Edit to add: I found a decent Youtube video that articulates what gets lost with compression like this:

Speaking of PROP SHAFT...let me know how that goes. I called the dealer and they were like "HUH?"... irritating as hell.

Rented a Kia Optima (same parent company, of course) over the weekend and while it didn't have as much bass, the top end was free of the annoying distortion and grittiness that plagues the Pallisade. I wish so badly that it could be fixed by some kind of a software/firmware upgrade, but I doubt we could be that lucky.

The best analogy I can think of is a squeaky floor. You can refinish the floor (EQ changes) or put carpet over it (Surround/Bass Boost off), but the floor will still squeak. I’ve not noticed any change in the compression artifacts, regardless of EQ/Surround/Bass settings. If anything, turning on the Surround effect mangles the audio enough so the compression static is less noticeable (like adding ketchup to an overcooked steak).:ROFLMAO:

3sons66... No luck on the vibration yet. Took it in and they road-force balanced the tires. No change. I need to take it back in and have them look at it again.

G-959473... Perhaps if enough of us bring the vehicle in to service and complain, they‘ll start looking at it. I’m going to mention it when I take it back in for the vibration issue.

First of all, let me say that overall, I'm a very happy Palisade owner. That having been said, the one thing that's a huge disappointment in my Limited is the sound system. Given the high quality of everything else in the vehicle and given that the Limited is supposed to have "premium audio," I've been massively underwhelmed. The bass is muddy/boomy, but the big issue is the high end. It sounds both compressed and rolled off. The tweeters must be crap. Either that, or they've badly messed up the EQ.

I wonder whether there's any chance that a firmware upgrade might help the electronics? That may not be the fix that's needed anyway. Seems like I'm probably going to be shopping for aftermarket speakers.

Anyone else feel this way?
YES I am highly disappointed in the quality of the music system. I should not have to go buy another system or speakers with all of the features that are on this vehicle.

dissatisfied with the sound system. Has anyone found a replacement system that will work in the Palisade? Looking for XM and navigation. Didn't know the SEL didn't have those features. Don't care for the module.

I went to the car infotainment system/ quick reference guide, Starting on Page 9-21.
You can adjust almost everything from your position for sound ,to live dynamic's,
clari-fi, tone and priority to give you the sound you want. I've tried to stay away from
the bass-boost , quantum logic surround and bose centerpoint as these seems to clip
certain frequencies to give those results.
With adjusting these you can get a very acceptable sound system adjusted to your
listening needs.

Agree..the sound system is poor, not what I was expecting, not even close.

I'd bet good money the issue is in the head unit. The tweeters seem to generate decent high end, albeit with artifacts and noise.

Eric2203, that's awesome! Definitely going to check out those links.

Hyundai seems to be doing some fancy audio processing (volume/level mixing of alerts, proximity beeping, music, phone calls, etc) not counting the soundstage and bass boost stuff. Their DSP is probably normalizing all inputs to a common compressed format for processing. Anyone know of a teardown of this thing yet?

I'll give $100 to the first person with a workaround (not involving buying more audio equipment) to fix the digital compression sound. 💰

Well my new Palisade audio system sounds like....expletive...but once for ten minutes it was fine. Don't know what I did and manuals are of no help
