Fellow palisade owners and those looking to purchase, I just want to share with you my latest Car buying experience.
How would you react if a vehicle sales Manager counter offer to the vehicle you are buying is lower than the offer you gave him?
Yes that happened to me.
To give you an overview of the story, I was in the market for a 3 Row SUV for my wife, after we test drove several. She decided she wanted a Hyundai Palisade Black exterior and black interior limited AWD.
I am very conservative when purchasing vehicles and normally offer the Lowest I have calculated that is fair and where the dealer will get a profit and I would get a good deal. After completing my calculations I emailed and called several dealers in a 400 miles radius. No dealership wanted to give me the time of day with my offer. Telling me I was crazy, that the specific model I wanted is selling for thousands above sticker price. And yes I knew this as I found that through my research, but I was not willing to pay sticker price. My goal was to start my negotiations much lower than sticker price.
I detailed my offer in the emails I sent and the reason why I considered my offer to be fair with all my research and After a couple of weeks of being rejected One sales manager replied to my email saying that he thought that it was a reasonable offer and that he was going to counter.
I was like “ok” at least I found someone that is willing to negotiate. I expected his counter offer to be much higher than what I sent, and I was ok on going couple of hundreds to one thousand higher than my original offer; because I knew it was low compared to what most people were paying for that model.
To my surprise his counter was lower. Yes you read correctly, LOWER. The reason was because I calculated title and registration wrong and instead of him taking advantage of that and take my offer as is, he deducted the difference from the final price.
mind blowing, When have you met a 100% honest salesmen or manager? For me this is a first.
The buying experience from this guy was unique, and very pleasant, everything was done via phone or email. I traveled to the dealership and in less than 1hr I was on my way home. No push nor bait and switch.
I asked him, why he reduced the mistake instead of taking my offer as it was. His answer was, “I have been in car sales for 11years, most of my business is from repeated customers. There is no need to lie or make big profits, when you can be fair and truthful and have a customer for life, you profit more in the long run” again
.
I am impressed and that is the reason I am sharing my experience with you. It is refreshing and amazing to make business with someone that is transparent, and truthful. Hope you guys get to experience the same if you are in the market for a vehicle.
His name is Gerald Walters, he is the Internet sales manager at Linwood Hyundai-Dodge-Ram-Jeep-Chrysler in Paducah Ky, He offered delivery but, I chosed to travel there and pick it up. It was well worth it.
I think good people need to be recognized, and this is my way of showing my appreciation for his honesty.
