Wind noise and buffering in Hyundai Palisade

I didn’t see the small foam piece near the front of the window next to the speaker, and my build date is 12/27/19. Arrived at dealer 3/5
Welcome to the foam club. Quality workmanship right there.

I could tell there is a tighter fit for the window to seat since there is a slight straining of the motor in the last inch of travel.
I didn't think you were supposed to put it directly in the window channel, only the channel adjacent to it, in between the window channel and the door panel. I wouldn't place it anywhere that is going to cause added resistance and friction to the motor. Hyundai might even deny a warranty claim if the motor stopped working prematurely.

Yup ya dont want to burn that motor....better off with the wind noise lol... boy I hope Hyundai looks at this forum..

We could always send them a link, but I have a feeling they already know about it.

Dealership phoned me today and said they fixed the rear sunroof. Apparently there was a loose bolt that they tightened and it fixed the problem? Now we are undecided again. Does putting that foam rope in the doors and window channels actually work?

The only channel I put the foam in is the interior gap we find when we peel the window seal away from the frame. Putting the rope in this gap channel pushes the oem rubber seal out a bit, and that causes the little bit of strain in the final 3/4 inch of travel.

I don’t open windows often so I’m not going to fret over it. Just hoping my whistle is eliminated

I find it somewhat curious that most major website and/or blog reviews fail to mention this pervasive wind issue in their reviews? A few make casual mention but the issue is certainly ā€œout in the openā€. Even the ā€œreputableā€ websites that take on vehicles for long term tests/reviews fail to point out the problem. The only plausible explanation I can think of is that Hyundai contributes financially to these reviewers and there must be some quid pro quo.

The more likely explanation is that not every car is exhibiting this issue. Or at least to a lesser degree. Mine doesn't have a wind noise issue, for example.

Even the people whose cars have the problem report many different symptoms and intensities. It seems like the spectrum of issues, causes and severity are almost limitless but not universal so there are probably many folks that don’t have any problem at all.

Driver’s mirror, whistling, interior air pressure, passenger B-pillar, road noise, tire noise, wind, cross wind, or all or none of the above, take your pick.

FWIW, mine was just a minor noise around the rear of the passenger window solved by a generous application of black foam rope.

Yeah, that's why I said to a lesser degree. It really isn't one problem, by the sound of it.

Possible but I doubt it...As time goes on you will see the wind noise problem become more publicized.

Perhaps...but for me anyway...the fact I will be highway driving...it’s a deal breaker as far as a purchase contender. Even if it exhibits no wind noise at the outset...I don’t want to take a chance it will rear its head later.

To recap:

1) Wind noise does not effect all Palisades. Some report very little to absolutely no noise
2) Hyundai does not currently have a reliable fix.
3) Owners have reported - Door adjustments, new seals and replaced mirrors as dealer attempted repairs.
4) Putting the HVAC system in recirculating mode seems to help some owners with the noise.
5) Adding weather stripping "every where you can make it fit" seems to help some owners as well.
6) Some owners report that it gets worse over time.

I've theorized that's its systemic to the design, or possibly a failing seal or a leaking mirror where it seals to the door..........I know one thing for certain. If it was simple, it would've been solved by now. I'm sure that many smart engineers at Hyundai are working to figure this one out and so far can't.

Are those smart engineers the same ones that designed the Palisade? This problem will be addressed in the 2021 model imo.The 2020 model will be corrected, by someone on this ,or another forum.

Cars.com tested the Palisade versus the new Highlander last month. No way to know if the Palisade was and early build or later. Heres their take on the Palisade’s wind noise.

Cars.com

The Highlander abates noise admirably in all conditions, though we observed some noise from the tires slinging water into the wheel wells that the Palisade masked better. That said, the Palisade has notable wind noise near the A-pillars around 40-50 mph, as well as more road noise at lower speeds. In this category, Toyota carried the rain-soaked day.

Here’s a few more reviews:

Hyundai boasts about the Palisade's abundant sound-deadening materials, but what it really needs are better door seals — wind noise cuts obtrusively through the cabin at highway speeds."

Another viewer also was interested in the noise: ā€œHave read comments about some wind noise at front pillar and window, any thoughts?ā€ I can confirm the comments about noise: There is some wind noise from the front A-pillars.....

As for sound insulation, Hyundai says it put a lot time and effort into this. And yes, the cabin is a quiet environment. But in one of the two versions we tried, we noted an irritating wind noise coming from the front left corner. Worth making a mental note of before you go for a test drive…

On the road, the Palisade rides comfortably and quietly, with the exception of some wind noise that seemed to be coming from the side mirrors. It wasn’t enough to be truly irritating, but it did occur every time I’d get the truck up to highway speed.

Jalopnik.com

What does put a dent in the Palisade’s aura of opulence is pretty apparent road noise, especially in the trims below the top Limited. At highway cruising speed, the wind is kind of oddly loud in the cabin.

Drivetribe.com

The eight-speed automatic fades into the background, the shifts are smooth and imperceptible even if outright acceleration is only okay. I did detect some wind noise around the side mirrors, however.

NVdaily.com

LIKE: Mileage, configuration versatility, visibility, spacious cabin/cargo area, good voice recognition.
DISLIKE: Start/stop delay, tight third row seating, some wind noise.

Car & Driver review

Noise from the road is suppressed; however, a large amount of wind noise penetrates the doors.

SUVs.com

While we found the vehicle to offer a solid and sleek ride, the wind noise can be loud. This is also a larger vehicle so if you’re looking for a ton of acceleration, you might be a little disappointed.

JDPower.com

There is some wind noise on the freeway, but the powertrain is muffled and road noise is nicely quelled.

Motorbiscuit.com

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade’s transmission is sufficient, but it ā€œgets flustered when driving up hills.ā€ Experts also believe that wind noise from the SUV’s doors could be much improved, as well as its acceleration for its size.

We noticed a surprising amount of wind noise at the pillars of both sides of the car

Guess the cat's out of the bag. One reviewer mentioned the start stop feature. I wedged a card in the button a day after purchase and never dealt with it again. When the 2021 model arrives I may test drive,if the wind noise has been corrected, maybe they will give me a great deal to trade up a year..

Yeah I’ve never seen a new vehicle where, across nearly every published review - the wind noise is mentioned as a problem. Confident that Hyundai is aware, also confident they’ll get it fixed. They need to.
