Wind noise and buffering in Hyundai Palisade

Providing a quick update on my experience with the dealer/tech line working the issue:

Went to dealer today to do a test drive and the issue still existed. I asked what was checked, and they took measurements of gaps between window glass and other parts within the door which all were as expected. The tech line had the seals checked and cleaned however the issue still exists as I would expect. The dealer tech had done an air bubble test and confirmed large air bubbles being formed in the areas we were hearing the noise from. At this time I was given a loaner so they can continue to work with tech line on it further. Part of the issue is that the noise isn't always consistent. You can drive a bit and not hear it, and then hear it really loud to just an average level. Sometimes I only hear it 65-80 mph but have also heard whistling and noise at odd times around 45 mph.

Do you or anyone else know how this "air bubble test" is done?

The tech told me the car was just pressurized with the AC on. So I believe you just leave AC on and put soapy water solution around door and see if it creates bubbles.

Is the wind noise everyone hears in their Palisade coming from just behind the drivers left ear? As if it's coming in the driver side rear-passenger door/window?

On our Telluride SXP, about maybe a month after we got it I started noticing a faint whistle just over my left ear when driving on the highway. But it doesn't seem to be consistent. When I first pointed this out to my wife as we were driving down I95, the hiss would literally disappear and come back as we hit a slight bump in the road.

A: I wonder if there is a design flaw within the vehicles that affects this given they share so much.

B: I've considered it could possibly be due to the fact that the front windows (and windshield) have acoustic laminated glass and the other windows do not, and if it might just be a the difference between half of the glass being extra quiet and half of it not. ie; sitting in more quiet area such as the driver seat makes the wind noise in the rear more apparent?

Also I've sat in the back seats and had my wife drive down 95 and I can't seem to pinpoint the noise, it's like a pesky smoke detector you thing is coming from 100 diff directions every time you think you found it, lol. Is this the same for you guys or is it very distinctly located?

I grasped the fixed door handle (not the one used to open the door) and firmly pulled it toward me while the wind noise was prevalent and I caused the noise to almost completely go away. This seems to mean that the air leak is around the door seals and not the window seals. As far as I can tell, the noise is caused by air escaping from the car and not the other way as evidenced by the noise diminishing when engaging Recirculate. The cabin is slightly pressurized when Recirculate is off. I'm sure everyone already knows this.

Stormy, if that's the case then your noise should be an easy fix. Have the door adjusted to close tighter (and hope the outer door skin doesn't look out of alignment from the rear door). I imagine it would take just a small adjustment to the door if you can eliminate the excessive wind noise by just pulling the door inward.

Hello,

We had the same issues. We live in South Carolina, bottom line the dealership is taking the car back based on South Carolina's lemon law. There is a post that mentions running the car with the recycle air on, believe it or not it worked for our car.

We purchased a 2020 limited edition ,window whistle on both front windows , replaced mirrors , door seals , door was checked for specs all good . Been dealing with shop for over 3 months , left with a loaner for 3 weeks , got it back tonight . wind noise still there . Anyone try the lemon law on this thing , we live in New York State

Are you expecting a replacement to fix it or getting a different car now?

Were working with corporate now, we love the car and would like to replace, if they don't allow a replacement, we will get a different car.

Mine was purchased in April, and had just arrived on the truck the day I got it. I don't recall the manufacture date, but I guess I would just raise, is it really something that is resolved and only specific to certain cars? I think it likely is an issue with them all, but some people are more acceptable of that level of noise maybe. In our experience in 2 20 hour drives, the whistling comes and goes. It is less noticeable too at speeds under 70 but we have heard it on occasion doing 45. I guess my point is, it seems to depend on driving habits, and possibly weather/wind conditions as to if the whistling will occur. We get the wind noise more consistently and this makes you think a window is cracked open. My only concern there is my wife's Ioniq, and the Venue (loaner) we got have wind noise too while not quite as bad as what we have heard on the palisade it is there. This raises concern that this is an issue with Hyundais in general and with that in mind, switching the car out for a new one I would think is time consuming, probably carries some cost and might land people no further forward. This is something I am debating myself personally too.

nice to "hear" others noticed this. Have mine since April, and its gotten quite bad. Interested in seeing what "fixes" people find

Larry, have you taken yours in to the dealer yet? Curious what they will do

So it looked like from recent threads the palisades manufactured after Oct 2019 were ok with wind noise issues but I just bought a 2021 and there is such a loud buffering and pressure around 35-55mph that I have to pop my ears from the pressure that builds in the cabin, anyone else?

We have a 2020, manufactured in May of this year, and we have no wind noise when windows are all closed. However, if a rear passenger cracks their window an inch or two, at highway speeds, we get that pressure build up feeling and loud sound. Almost sounds like a helicopter. Doesn't happen with the front windows.

Buffering with the windows closed?

With a window open that is not uncommon in cars.

Definitely not as loud as with a window down but same type of sound and effect

There was one owner who had a wind buffering sound that couldn’t be cured. He had his car lemoned.

You need to take yours to the dealer and get things fixed ASAP.

I have a December build and had a wind whistle but only when I had the hvac in the open (fresh air) position. Closing off the Recirc made the whistling disappear. I just cured my wind whistle completely by installing close cell foam rope in the window channels.

But that’s different than buffeting. I’d schedule to have my car looked at ASAP if I had wind buffering with all the windows closed.

Curious if your buffering is present with the HVAC in Recirc Mode.

Will schedule asap, thank you, and trying with recirc on this afternoon to see. I tend to turn it off so I’m not sure

Are you sure one of the rear windows isn't cracked?
That's the only way I can get it to sound like that.
Been that way on my last 4 vehicles if window is cracked in second row.

No, we have double and triple checked. That was my first assumption as well
