To be honest, I very rarely actually use any map apps for anything other than estimating ETAs or getting an idea of how many miles I have to go on a big trip. Otherwise, I’m just using them for an overview of where I am. My most-used map app is Apple Maps since it’s best integrated with all of my devices, but I do sometimes use Google Maps as well when I’m feeling like something different. When I took this particular screenshot, I was just trying to see what it looked like in the new dashboard view when it finally added support. I almost never navigate using the car’s built-in navigation system unless I’m on a long drive because it’s nice to have remaining mileage info in the gauge cluster.
I actually typically keep my
CarPlay in split screen so I can have my audio (music/podcast) information take up the entire
CarPlay interface, and then have the factory map (or weather) off to the right. I do this because if you have
CarPlay take up the full screen and use the dashboard screen, you have limited playback information and small album art. So I’m willing to sacrifice seeing Apple/Google Maps to see my audio info as prominently as possible. It’s pretty much my own hybrid version of the dashboard screen. And if I really want to see Apple/Google Maps, they’re just a tap away.
I’ve basically never used Waze, but I know a lot of people enjoy using it. I know Google has added some bits and pieces of Waze to their Google Maps app. So I guess it depends on what you’re primarily using it for and what interface you prefer.
