Wind noise and buffering in Hyundai Palisade

Very interesting..just what the heck are you supposed to do with the $300..buy ear plugs..those side view mirrors seem to get a lot of attention..they dont fold ..the color on the limited does not match the body color..and they cause noise..I feel after reading your saga, along with the fact this problem has persisted for eight months....there ain't gonna be a fix.. 300 bucks....now that is a classic...
Here's my video. You can start to hear the resonance at :16. Don't bother listening on a cell phone as you don't have enough bass to hear the low frequency drone. Anything above 60mph and this drone happens. After 15 minutes of highway driving you will absolutely lose your mind. No radio can drown this out without making the occupants deaf. I can assure you, that if Hyundai doesn't fix this, it will be the last Hyundai I ever buy.

They have over the past 8 months come out with worthless service bulletins...supposedly offered $300 to an owner to just go away, and you feel there is a chance in hell this issue is going to be resolved ,I kinda doubt it. Oh that's right the plant has been shut down, but as soon as things get back to normal,a fix will be the very first thing on their to do list...lol

That is exactly the humm that I have. It seems like certain wind conditions with a cross wind. I have found that if I tap the window button and it lowers the window ever so slightly, the humm stops or atleast decreases. It’s a shame to have to do thi on an almost $50,000 auto. I love my palisade but this humming and also some whistling is a turn off. I do listen to music high enough to drown it out but that humm can even be heard with music on. I listened to you video on my phone and I could immediately hear the humm because my ear is trained to it now.

Let's be honest about what has happened over 8 months...

There first needed to be enough vehicles shipped that customers had them
then there needed to be enough sold to identify there was a problem
then there needed to be some amount of time for them to come up with a series of fixes
then there needed to be enough time to get that out in the form of the tsbs
then there needed to be enough time for them to apply it to customer vehicles
then there needed to be enough time to determine that for some, that wasn't working
then there needed to be enough time to find a new fix
somewhere in the middle of that a global pandemic came around that closed up hyundai
now there needs to be some time for people to come back to work and prioritize finding that fix again
then there will need to be enough time to get the supply chain for the fix back to life
then there will need to be enough time to get that fix out to people

I get the frustration, but Hyundai has been a lot more responsive to this than I would expect from most brands (one anecdote of a $300 offer aside). Either lemon your car and get it over with or be patient.

So please, can somebody help me out. Is there or is there not a build date after which the wind noise has stopped?
Not really. Some have it, some don't. Some, like mine, only have it during very strong cross winds.

Yes, we’ve had the wind issue since we purchased our Palisade in December 2019. We’ve had it back to the dealership five times for troubleshooting and “fixes”. The dealership changed the door seals and pressure tested the cabin but nothing fixed the wind noise. Finally, the service manger removed the mirrors and took our Palisade for a test drive with the mirrors removed... the excessive wind noise was gone. The service manager concluded the wind noise is turbulent air from the side view mirrors hitting the windows but there is nothing they can do about that. Our dealership has been great but Hyundai refuses to find a solution. We filed a claim and Hyundai offered $300 compensation. We turned down the $300 and decided to open a claim with the BBB.
So according to you the mirrors are the issue,so to correct the problem, one resolve would be to redesign the mirror and replace on all affected vehicles. Not going to happen, unless the mirror design is changed for the 2021 model, and then perhaps Hyundai fits them to the 2020 model.

well said, I have faithin Hyundai and my great dealership, I will go in there when this pandemic dies down and I am sure they will fix the issue

There "appears" to be different kinds and sources of noises. Some are whistling noises, that may have been fixed after a certain date by improving the seals and other rubber parts.

Others seem to be complaining about wind noises generated due to the shape of outside mirrors. That might require a redesign of the shape of the outside mirror assembly. I don't know if that has occurred.

In the last few seconds of the video, there seems to be some visible vibration or turbulence coming from the upper left corner of the mirror surface. I wonder if it is possible to stuff some kind of filling behind the mirror in that spot (but not so much that it interferes with the adjustment of the mirror angle). I would try some kind of black synthetic mesh material that will not hold moisture, but is firm enough to keep the mirror from vibrating.

You could also try adjusting the mirror to a slightly different angle, just as an experiment.

It’s currently at the dealer and I refuse to pick it up until the noise is gone. Judging by my notifications they are working hard on it over the last 48 hours. I sincerely hope they fix it as I’d prefer not to lemon the vehicle, but I will if needed.

Before you count on that being an option, you might want to check the Lemon Laws in your state.

Already have and we have a lawyer on retainer for business. I also have 7 repairs a broken contract from Hyundai USA with email proof and a ticking clock waiting for repairs as the vehicle is out of service. The case will show all of the above, plus loss of time and use. I say lemon law but it will be a breach of contract and real damages case that involves a vehicle. Unfortunately for them they’ve disappointed and lied to the wrong owner. I won’t and don’t give up on these things.

For those wondering about criterion:

1) Purchased in my state. CHECK
2) Not used. CHECK
3) Problem in the first 2yrs/24K miles. CHECK
4) Same problem, presented for repair multiple times (3 and counting) CHECK
5) 20 days at dealer to fix. 4 and counting and not coming back until it’s fixed.
6) Case filed within first four years. CHECK

The number of TSB’s, recalls and angry owners with the same problem will present some lawyers with a class action opportunity if Hyundai USA doesn’t get their collective $h!+ together.

There have been no recalls on this issue. Recalls are for the repair of safety related issues that are coordinated by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). If a recall is issued, all owners must be notified by mail.

Some state Lemon Laws mention that minor issues may not qualify, but obviously this is a subjective evaluation.

What state are you in? At least in California(only place I have personal experience with lemon laws), this list doesn't satisfy lemon law criteria yet.

Congrats to you....you may also want to throw in there..the noise is such a distraction it impedes your ability to drive safely, and the noise may interfere with you hearing emergency vehicle sirens,as you are forced to have the radio at high volume to drown out the noise..you will win in the end which will come sooner than you think.

Frankly it won’t be an issue either way. Lemon law cases are pretty pedestrian affairs. The breach of contract piece will also be straight forward due to my email trail. As for the TSB‘s and recalls.......just further evidence of just how many issues there are with this 6 month old vehicle.

Huh? There's one recall for side-curtain airbag bolts. TSBs are few and far between as well: a drive train vibration that was limited to a certain range of vehicles, the infamous wind noise, the blind spot monitoring (which did not prevent use of the car or, you know... mirrors), the nav update because the radio can lock up, and the rear sunroof for select owners.

This is nothing compared to many other vehicles. I totally get the frustration with the wind noise, but let's not exaggerate here. There are NOT many issues with this vehicle. Just one that happens to be loud and irritating and makes owners believe this is the worst car to ever be built...
